Montcalm wins sectional championship, G-Girls blank Galax

MEADOW BRIDGE —  Katelyn Booker raced home on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Montcalm a 7-6 win over the Meadow Bridge Wildcats and the Class A, Region III, Section 2 championship.

Alexis Hatfield got the pitching victory and Stephanie Lytle was the loser.

In the tournament in which Montcalm defeated Meadow Bridge 16-15 in the opening game  on Tuesday, and a game against Greenbrier West that went 10 innings over two days, Hatfield, Hannah Johnson and Autumn Bolden were bit hitters for the Lady Generals.

In the 10-inning affair against Greenbrier West, Montcalm had 21 hits.

The Lady Generals will host either Fayetteville or Richwood next Thursday in a regional semifinal game.



Graham 4, Galax 0

GALAX, Va. — The Graham G-Girls got two goals from Morgan Whisman and a goal each from Caroline Kelly and Kali Furry to defeat the Galax Maroon Tide in a Mountain Empire District soccer match.

GALAX, Va. — The Graham G-Girls remained perfect (6-0) in Mountain Empire District play with an 8-1 win Thursday night at Galax.  Overall the G-Girls are 10-1 and play next on Tuesday, hosting Narrows.

JV Baseball

Graham splits

BLUEFIELD, Va. — The Graham G-Men JV team split a pair of games with Galax.

In the opener the G-Men lost 16-6. Ben Meade was 2-for-3 two RBIs and Jacob Cruise was 2-for-2 with a double and 2 RBIs.  Dakota Jones 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Graham took the second game 2-0. Ben Street pitched five shutout innings, struck out five and allowed two hits.

Meade had a triple, Nick Hale was 2-for-3 and Blake Boone 1-for-3.
