Bluefield boys and girls win Coalfield Conference tennis titles

BECKLEY — The Bluefield Beavers boys and girls tennis teams won the Coalfield Conference championship. The two-day event concluded Thursday. BHS boys individual winners were Justin Freund, Jose Tarin and Paul Hoffman as the Beavers won three of the four singles. In doubles Freund-Taurin and Paul Hoffman-Tyler Myers got victories.

In the girls competition individual winners were Molly Lovern and Sarah Brady. Lovern and Claire Bailey teamed up for a doubles title and the Brady-Thomas duo claimed a crown.



Tazewell 6, Carroll County 3

TAZEWELL, Va. — Tazewell’s boys beat Carroll County in Southwest District tennis action. Tazewell plays next on Monday at Richlands.

Baseball

Montcalm 8, Summers County 7

COOPERS — The Montcalm Generals improved to 7-8 on the season with an 8-7 win over the Summers County Bobcats.

John Casto was 4-for-4 with 2 RBI and Steven Whittaker had two hits to lead the Generals. Aaron Presley picked up the win on the mound.

Montcalm returns to action today, hosting Meadow Bridge.

Grayson County 7, Graham 3

BLUEFIELD, Va. — Graham outhit Grayson County, but the Blue Devils captured a 7-3 Mountain Empire District win.

Spencer Sheets was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Tony Lovell rapped out two hits for the G-Men (4-7, 0-2), who return to the field Monday against Narrows.

Graham 6, Grayson County 1

INDEPENDENCE, Va. — Forrest Yates scored three goals and an assist to lead the G-Men to a Mountain Empire District win at Grayson County.

In addition to Yates’ three goals, Graham also got scores from Nathan Figueroa, Caleb Cox and Samuel Stowers. Stowers also had two assists and Alex Aiello had one.

Hunter Cook had 15 saves and the G-Men had 18 shots on goal.

Graham is now 4-1-1 overall and 3-0 in the MED. They return to the pitch Tuesday, hosting Narrows.
