Greeneville shuts out Rays twice

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. — The Princeton Rays continued to struggle with the bats, getting blanked twice by the Greeneville Astros 10-0 and 4-0 during a doubleheader in front of 1,484 spectators on Thursday night at Pioneer Park.

Princeton managed just four hits in the two games, with the Rays’ season average dropping to .206 on the season. The Rays have scored just 69 runs or just 2.7 runs a game.

Greeneville (17-10) banged out 10 hits and scored 10 runs in the 10-0 opening opening game win over Princeton.

Ricky Gingras led the Astros with two hits, including a home run, four runs batted in and two runs scored. Edwin Gomez, Chase McDonald and Angel Ibanez each had two hits, including a double apiece, for Greeneville.

Greeneville scored four runs in the third and fourth innnings.

Edison Frias (2-2) and Ryan Connolly combined to allow just two hits.

Princeton received a hit apiece from Coty Blanchard and Jesus Araiza.

German Marquez took the loss for Princeton, dropping to 1-3 on the season.

Josh Kimborowicz (0-2) and Clayton Crum allowed just four hits in the nightcap, but the Astros scored a pair of runs in the second and fifth innings to stop the Rays.

Brett Phillips drove in two runs for Greeneville, while Gomez and Ibanez had an RBI apiece. Krishawn Holley (2-0) earned the win in relief. Jordan Mills worked four innings as the starter for the Astros, allowing no hits, no walks and five strikeouts.

Douglas Duran and Chad Nacapoy had hits for the Rays, who were also hampered by a pair of errors that led to two of Greeneville’s run being unearned.

Princeton (6-20), which has gone 14 straight innings without a run, will complete its three-game series tonight at Greeneville. The Rays are 1-13 away from Hunnicutt Field this season.

The Rays will begin a three-game home series on Saturday with the Kingsport Mets.

Greeneville is in first place in the West Division.
