PULASKI, Va. — The second playoff season in the three-year history of the Bluefield Blue Jays sputtered to a finish on Sunday at Calfee Park, as the Pulaski Mariners swept Bluefield from the Appalachian League playoffs by a 6-4 score.

It was the eighth straight loss for the Blue Jays, who led the Appy League East Division for a large part of the season.

Bluefield took a 4-1 lead into the bottom of the fifth, only to have Pulaski score the last five runs of the game in that inning.

Shortstop Franklin Barreto, added late in the year to the Bluefield roster, drove in three runs but also committed two errors. He and Appy All-Star Matt Dean were each 3 for 4 at the plate. Bluefield out-hit their hosts 10 to 7.

Aaron Barbosa and Gabrial Franca were 2 for 4 for the Mariners. Franca hit a pair of doubles.

Mitch Nay doubled to lead off the Bluefield second inning and scored on a single by Barreto. The Mariners tied it in the next inning on an RBI double from Tyler Smith.

The Blue Jays loaded the bases in the fourth, via walks from Derrick Loveless and Nay and a single by Matt Dean. Barreto then singled to center, where Barbosa’s error allowed three runs to score.

But in the bottom half, a walk, a pair of errors, a passed ball, a double by Franca, a triple by Barbosa and a single by Jeff Zimmerman helped Pulaski take the lead for good.

Bluefield starting pitcher Alberto Tirado wound up with the hard-luck loss. In 3 1/3 innings he allowed three hits and struck out three Mariners, and was charged with five runs — just one of them earned.

Eddie Campbell, a left-handed alumnus of the Virginia Tech baseball program, pitched the first five innings for Pulaski and got the win, striking out nine batters while allowing six hits and all four runs, three of them earned. Carlos Misell pitched the ninth and earned the save.

The Mariners move on to the Appalachian League championship series, beginning on Tuesday or Wednesday, against either Greeneville or Kingsport from the West Division. The first game of that series will be hosted by the West Division survivor.
