EAST RIVER —
Will Hickman netted four goals and added two assists as the Princeton Senior High boys soccer team began its regular season with a 7-2 win against county rival Bluefield on a warm Monday evening at East River Soccer Complex.
Colton Fix added two goals and one assist for the Tigers and Trey Shrewsbury had one goal. Jacob Whittington had two assists, and Johnny McFadden and Daniel Harmon contributed one each. The Tigers took 33 shots, 23 of them on goal.
Bluefield’s keeper stopped 16 of them.
The Beavers had eight shots, seven on goal, and Princeton goalkeeper Tanner Neely had six stops.
Information was unavailable on Bluefield’s goal scoring.
Princeton coach Steve Bailey said, “What it means is, now the preseason is over and we were able to start the season with a good win, a win that gives us a little confidence going into our conference games ... to meet our goal to get to the state championships.”
He added, “Bluefield played hard. It was a good, clean game overall. Robb Williams does a good job with those boys.”
Princeton hosts South Charleston today at 6:30 p.m. at the Princeton soccer complex.
Girls: Princeton 8, Shady Spring 1
BECKLEY — Amanda Barrett had four goals and a pair of assists as the Princeton Senior High girls soccer team got the season underway by thumping Shady Spring at the YMCA Soccer Complex on Monday.
Shaylah Walls had three goals for the Tigers. Danielle Hall added the other goal and provided an assist, and Laken Autrey had an assist. Princeton led 3-0 at halftime.
Lindsey Thompson scored for Shady.
Princeton goalkeeper Haley Coburn made 10 saves.
Princeton begins Mountain State Athletic Conference play today with a trip to South Charleston, and returns home for a conference match on Thursday with Winfield.
