GREENEVILLE, Tenn. —
Tanner Mathis hit a single to center in the bottom of the 10th inning, scoring pinch-runner Marc Wik to give the Greeneville Astros a 4-3 victory over their visitors, the Bluefield Blue Jays, before 1,504 fans on Sunday night.
Matt Dean led off with his 14th double in the ninth and scored on a groundout to put Bluefield ahead 3-2, but miscues by the Blue Jays in the bottom half allowed the Astros to tie the game again and produce extra innings.
Greeneville’s Juan Santana reached first on a fielding error by Mitch Nay. A sacrifice bunt moved Santana to second and a groundout got him to third, and he scored on a wild pitch by Bluefield reliever Phil Kish.
The Blue Jays had taken a 2-0 lead in the third. Andres Sotillo led off with a double. Two strikeouts later, Derrick Loveless tripled to left to generate the first run. He scored on a single by Nay.
The Astros tied it in the fifth on a two-RBI triple to right by Chase McDonald.
Greeneville’s fourth pitcher of the day, Raul Rivera (4-2), induced three straight groundouts by Bluefield in his only inning, the 10th, to pick up the win. Starter Jandel Gustave struck out seven Jays in five innings and surrendered two earned runs.
Kish (0-1) took the loss. Bluefield starter Jairo La Bourt, fresh off being named to the Appalachian League All-Star team, allowed seven hits, one walk and two earned runs in 4 2/3 innings. His earned-run average is now 1.92.
Sotillo, Nay and Alex Maldonado each batted 2 for 4 for the Blue Jays.
Bluefield remains in Greeneville today and Tuesday, and concludes the regular season in Kingsport before starting postseason play on Saturday.
Pulaski whipped West Division leader Kingsport 15-0 on Sunday to move within half a game of Bluefield in the Appy League East Division.
