The Bluefield High School boys soccer team opened the season with a 7-2 win over the Nicholas County Grizzlies, Saturday afternoon.
Tyler Easley scored Bluefield’s first goal on a header from Evan Abbey.
The second goal came unassisted by Ryan Stamper.
Nicholas County rallied to tie the score at the half.
In the second half after some adjustments, the Beavers scored five unanswered goals. Stamper added his second goal from a Zach Springman pass, while Springman scored two goals on passes from Stamper and Easley. Abbey scored an unassisted goal and had his second assist in the game when he laid a ball to the head of Tyler Brooks for the Beavers’ final score.
The Beavers have three games this week as they play Mercer County rivals Princeton, Monday and PikeView, Tuesday, before finishing the week Thursday at Midland Trail.
Fairmont Sr. 2, PikeView 1
FAIRMONT — The Polar Bears of Fairmont Senior got goals from Caleb and Justin Anselene to slip past the PikeView Panthers, Saturday afternoon.
Vaughn Campbell scored PikeView’s goal and Panthers’ keeper Ted White had one save. Fairmont Senior goalkeeper David Childers had seven saves.
PikeView is now 0-1-1 on the season and will play at Bluefield, Tuesday at 7 p.m.
Nicholas Co. 4, Bluefield 1
SUMMERSVILLE — The Bluefield Lady Beavers played two players down and fell to Nicholas County 4-1, Saturday. Abby Atwell scored the Beavers' lone goal.
Bluefield hosts PikeView at 5 p.m., Tuesday.
Fairmont Sr. 2, PikeView 0
FAIRMONT — Avery Towns scored a goal and an own goal by PikeView gave Fairmont Senior a 2-0 win over the Lady Panthers, Saturday afternoon.
PikeView goalkeeper Kristin Brinkley had six saves and Lady Polar Bears keeper Kayla Delorenzo had one save.
PikeView is now 0-2-0.
