Thomas, Eldridge still wrestling on state mats

HUNTINGTON — The first day of the West Virginia state high school wrestling tournament is in the books and two Bluefield High School grapplers have advanced to the second day of competition.

Julius Thomas defeated Wyatt Dawson of Clay County 5-1 in the 220-pound weight class and Brandon Eldridge at 160 pounds beat Michael Parker of Fairmont Senior 12-0.

Three Beaver wrestlers were eliminated from competition on Thursday.

Tyler Brooks was pinned by the No. 2 wrestler in the 126-pound division, Casey Ritchie of Calhoun County. At 195, Shawn Pennington fell to Jared Wright of Magnolia 15-4, and in the 285-pound class, Isaiah Holyfield of Robert C. Byrd pinned Cody Gore.

Competition continues today and Saturday at the Big Sandy Arena in downtown Huntington.
