RICHLANDS, Va. —
Zachary Luttrell has racked up impressive golfing honors already. He now plans to add to them as a member of the Bluefield College golf team.
The Richlands High School senior signed his intent to join the Rams, led by second-year head coach BJ Bauer, on Monday in the high school library.
Luttrell, a Richlands native, is coming off a strong senior season in which he finished third in the 2013 state golf tournament and earned All-Region and All-State recognition.
Luttrell took Conference 39 Player of the Year honors, following his medalist performance in the Southern Empire Tournament at the challenging Fincastle on the Mountain. His even par 70 bested the 34-man field by six shots.
Luttrell is an experienced tournament player, earning more than 60 top-five finishes in the last nine years.
Three times he was named Blue Ridge Jr. Golf Tour Player of the Year, while he has qualified for events such as the U.S. Kids Teen World Championships (2009), the U.S. Kids Jekyll Island Cup (2006-2010) and the Virginia State Golf Association (VSGA) Jr. Amateur (2012, 2013).
In 2012, he carded a second-place finish at the Johnson City Open.
Bauer looks for Luttrell to be another part of rejuvenating the Bluefield College golf team, especially with talent from Southwest Virginia.
