Concord-Bluefield play to draw

ATHENS — The Concord University men's soccer team and Bluefield College played to a 2-2 draw Wednesday afternoon at Anderson Field.

The Mountain Lions struck first as Corey Gaylor tallied his first collegiate goal.

The Rams got even in the 32nd minute when Jacob Mader scored off of an assist from James Gunn.

Before half Ryan Forde registered his eightth goal of the season.

For most the second half Concord and Bluefield traded shots, but neither team could add to the scoreboard until Nick Rivadeneira got the Rams back on the board in the 80th minute.

In overtime neither team posed a serious threat as just four total shots were taken in the two-10 minute overtime sessions.

CU was able to outshoot the Rams 15-14. Concord also held the edge in corner kicks, 5-4.

With the draw, the Mountain Lions stand at 3-8-2. Meanwhile, Bluefield is 8-6-1.

West Liberty 1

ATHENS — Led by the first two goals of freshman midfielder Sara van den Akker's career, the Concord University women's soccer team defeated West Liberty University, 3-1, Wednesday afternoon at Anderson Field.

Concord trailed 1-0 at halftime, but scored three times in the second half to secure the home victory.

The victory improves Concord's record to 5-7-1 overall and 3-6-1 in Mountain East Conference competition. The Hilltoppers drop to 4-8-1 overall and 3-6-1 in league play. With four conference contests remaining on Concord's schedule, the Mountain Lions are still alive for a berth into the MEC Tournament.
