Light night for action in Black Diamond

HURLEY, Va. — Only three of the five Black Diamond District football teams are in action tonight in week two of the 2013 season and all three contests are non-district affairs.

Grundy hosts longtime rival Lebanon in its home opener. It’s the first of five straight home games for the Golden Wave, who will finish the year with four straight road trips.

Twin Valley, meanwhile, travels to Montcalm. This is the sixth year in a row the new interstate rivals will meet.

Haysi and Honaker have the week off.

The marquee game of the week for BDD clubs could be Eastside at Hurley tonight at The Cliff.

The Spartans won eight games and advanced to the second round of the playoffs last year. Hurley hopes to continue its recent winning ways and at least match what Eastside did in just the Spartans second season of existence.

Eastside lost star running back Erikk Banks to graduation, but returns quarterback Caleb Riner, two of his top receivers and three big offensive linemen. Riner led the Spartans to an impressive 18-0 shutout of Central-Wise last week.

“We have our hands full this week with Eastside,” Hurley coach Greg Tester said. “They’re loaded with athletes.

“We’ll have to get some pressure on (Riner). They’re fundamentally sound defensively. We can’t afford the mistakes we had against East Ridge.”

Hurley pulled away from East Ridge in the second half in a 36-14 win over the Warriors last week. Big plays were the rule, led by junior Tray Oliver, who ran for 110 yards and caught two touchdown passes, including a 58-yarder.

Small plays could be the key for the Rebels this week.

“This week we have to play sound and keep the chains moving to keep Eastside’s offense off the field,” Tester added. “They have a good football team and it will be a challenge but our guys will be up for it.”
