Beavers roll up 60 on Graham

Associated Press

BLUEFIELD — D.J. Edwards ran for 99 yards and caught passes for 114 and R.J. Bourne completed 11 of 14 passes for 219 yards to lead the Bluefield Beavers to a 60-38 win over the Graham G-Men in the 87th Battle of the Bluefields, Friday night at Mitchell Stadium.

“I think we’re going to be explosive running the ball and passing,” said Beavers head coach Fred Simon. “I think it’s going to make us tougher and hopefully we’ll get better.”

Samuel Stowers’ opening kick went into the endzone and Bluefield started deep in its own territory. A penalty on the kickoff moved the ball back to the 10 yard line and the first shotgun snap to Bourne was low and he covered it on the six. The Beavers then began clicking with their ground game. A 15-yard run by D.J. Stewart and a 14-yarder by Edwards helped move the ball down the field and Bluefield got to the Graham 24. A loss pushed the Beavers back to midfield, but a G-Men penalty gave Bluefield a fourth-and-one. Picking up the first down, Edwards later carried to the one. Another loss took the ball back to the three where Stewart carrid it in for the game’s first score. Frankie Desiderio’s kick made it 7--0.

The G-Men had two plays, the second of which an eight-yard completion from Colby Hill to Bryce Farris, resulted in a fumble and Bluefield pounced on the ball near midfield.

It took Bluefield seven plays and 3:12 to reach the endzone, Corey Coppola going the last four yards for the score. Desiderio’s kick made it 14-0.

Receiving a pooch kick the G-Men drove to the Beavers’ 15 where on fourth down Stowers came on for a 32-yard field goal attempt. The kick was blocked and Justin Carter picked it out of the air at the five and returned it to the Graham 30.

Bourne, in his first game at quarterback, completed a 19-yard pass to Edward and Stewart scampered into the endzone for the score from three yards out. Desiderio’s kick was true and Bluefield led 21-0 with 8:18 to play in the second quarter.

The next Bluefield scoring drive was one play. Stewart returned a Stowers punt 57 yards to the G-Men two. Edwards then took it in for the score. The PAT kick hit the cross bar and it was 27-0.

Graham lit up the lights on its side of the scoreboard midway through the second period, driving 87 yards in eight plays, the big play a 36 yard completion from Hill to Charlie Benfield. A roughing the passer penalty on the play by the Beavers took the ball to the nine and Dylan Cook took it in from there for the score wihth 3:28 to go before half.

Bluefield was not finished. Turning to the air the Bourne and Justin Carter connected on a spectacular pass play down the left sideline where Carter made a remarkable catch. Edwards ran 20 yards and then caught a 20 yard pass from Bourne for the score and Bluefield took a 34-6 lead into the half.

Graham received the second half kickoff and after getting one first down, punted to the Beavers who got the bal loin the G-Men 40 yard line.

Bourne completed 15-yard passes to Carter and Edwards and then connected with Brandon Lilly from 20 yards out for the touchdown, capping a six-play, 40 yard drive. Again Desiderio’s kick was good and the Bluefield lead grew to 41-6.

Graham did not quit, going 71 yards in only five plays. The big one a 38 yard touchdown run by Benfield where he was bottled up at the line and then broke from the scrum and ran untouchded to paydirt. Hill connected with Farris for the two-point conversion.

The Beavers embarked on a long drive, suing 11 pays and going 68 yards. Bourne had a key 18 yard run on fourth and one and he then passed 27 yards to Edwards for another Bluefield touchdown. The kick was good and at the end of three quarters the Beavers were on top 48-14.

Beavers Coach Fred Simon turned to reserves in the final period on both sides on the ball and freshman Carlos Reed scampered five yards for a score.

Hill and Farris hooked up again for the G-Men, this time on a 16-yard pass play for a score, and then they connected again for the two point conversion to make it 54-22. After an onside kick Hill found his favorite target, Farris for a 37-yard score with just over two minutes remaining in the game. Hill then ran a bootleg for the PAT.

Getting the ball on its own 47 after Graham failed to get another onside kick, Reed took the handoff from freshman quarterback Jordan Smith and ran 53 yards for Bluefield’s final score of the night.

Graham was not finished as Hill threw his final touchdown pass of the night, a 44-yarder to Benfield. The conversion pass from Hill to Dequan Boooker was good to make the final score 60-38.

Graham head coach Mike Williams said, “We’re going to take the weekend off, the players are and we’ll study the film, come in here Monday, lift the weights, hit practice, learn from it and move on. If you would have told me we’d score 38 (points) and lose, I’d be shocked.”

Hill completed 14-of-23 passes for 250 yards and three touchdowns. Farris caught six passes for 93 yards, Benfield two for 80 and Kyshon Lee one for 51 yards.

Cook was Graham’s leading ballcarrier as he gained 75 yards on 13 carries.

Both team have rival games again next week as the G-Men host Tazewell and Bluefield visits Princeton.
