One bad inning can ruin a team’s focus. The Bluefield Blue Jays didn’t let that happen on Monday evening.
Hosting their nearest competitors in the Appalachian League East, the Blue Jays spotted the Pulaski Mariners a 4-0 lead in the second inning, then made up the gap in the next frame and surged to an 8-4 win at Bowen Field.
The victory extended Bluefield’s division lead to 3 1/2 games over the Mariners and tied the current series with Pulaski at a game apiece.
Tazewell native Zak Wasilewski started on the mound for the Jays, but got into trouble in the top of the second. A pair of singles sandwiched around a Bluefield error loaded the bases, and Zach Shank’s sacrifice fly allowed Wilton Martinez to tally the first run.
Toby DeMello followed with a two-RBI double. He later scored on a wild pitch by Wasilewski for the 4-0 advantage.
Bluefield answered with five runs in the third inning, feasting on a pair of walks and four hits off Pulaski starter Eddie Campbell. Franklin Barreto drew a bases-loaded walk to plate D.J. Jones. Mitch Nay and Matt Dean then hit back-to-back doubles to give Bluefield a 5-4 lead.
Dean closed out the scoring in the fifth with his fifth home run of the season, over left field with two men on base.
Wasilewski pitched into the fifth inning, and struck out six Mariners but allowed seven hits and four runs, two of them earned. Alvido Jiminez came on in relief and earned the pitching win, giving up one hit and one walk in 2 2/3 innings.
The Blue Jays won despite being out-hit nine to five. Dean was 2 for 3 with five runs batted in and Nay drove in three. Seven of the nine Bluefield batters drew bases on balls.
DeMello and Aaron Barbosa each got a pair of hits for Pulaski.
The final game of the year between the teams is scheduled for a 7:05 first pitch this evening at Bowen Field.
The Appalachian League has the day off on Wednesday. Bluefield’s final homestand of the regular season runs Thursday through Saturday, as the Jays host the Kingsport Mets.
