Braves outduel Jays

Danville takes series opener in Bluefield

BLUEFIELD — With almost half a season left to go, the Danville Braves were not about to concede the East Division crown to the Bluefield Blue Jays on Monday night.

Danville made the most of seven hits and two Bluefield errors and gained a game on the Appy League division-leading Blue Jays at Bowen Field, taking a 5-1 win in the opener of a three-game set.

A three-run second inning by the Braves was more than Bluefield could overcome, as Danville starter Jean Carlos Gil allowed six hits but also struck out six batters and walked just one in his five innings of work.

Bluefield’s Adonys Cardona nearly matched him. In four innings he struck out five Braves and walked one, but gave up six hits and four earned runs to take the loss.

Blake Brown was 3 for 4 at the plate for Danville, including a solo home run in the fourth.

The Blue Jays were paced by catcher Garrett Custons, who was 2 for 4 and drove in Mitch Nay with Bluefield’s only run with two outs in the fourth.

Bluefield relief pitcher Brady Dragmire gave his team a chance, pitching five innings and giving up just one hit, a run-scoring double by Brown.

The last five Blue Jays batters were retired to wrap up the contest.

The series continues today and Wednesday with 7:05 start times. The Blue Jays will begin August with a long road trip to Elizabethton, Thursday through Saturday.
