Orioles get first win

KINGSPORT, Tenn. — Six singles and a groundout. Put back-to-back in one inning Friday night, complementing a sparkling pitching effort, and they added up to the first victory of the year for the Bluefield Orioles.

The Birds broke into the win column with a 4-1 decision at the home of the Kingsport Mets.

Winning pitcher Jorge Luis Almanzar (1-0) struck out seven Mets and gave up three hits in five innings. Not to be outdone, Josh Dowdy relieved the starter and collected five K’s in two innings. Thomas Phelps, the loser on Wednesday night, wrapped up the win on Friday by going the final two frames.

The start of the game was delayed by rain. The Orioles broke a scoreless deadlock in the fifth with four runs, via singles by Edihno Meyer, Luis Ramirez, Kipp Schutz, Dashenko Ricardo, Larry Rivera and Omar Casamayor, followed by an RBI groundout from Javier Santana.

The Mets got their run in the bottom of the ninth. Joseph Bonfe doubled and John Freeman’s single brought him home.

The loss went to Kingsport starter Chris Hilliard (0-1).

Omar R. Casamayor drove in two runs in a 2-for-4 performance for Bluefield. Meyer and Schutz also batted 2-for-4.

Bluefield (1-3) continues its road trip in Kingsport (0-4) tonight and Sunday.
