Giles remains unbeaten; Montcalm finishes with a victory

PEARISBURG, Va. — Brett Whitlow averaged more than 10 yards per carry, scoring on a 49-yard run and kicking six extra points as the undefeated Giles Spartans dominated Floyd County 42-8 on Friday night at the Giles County seat.

The Spartans (9-0), the top team in Group 2A-West, ran up 306 total yards, 278 on the ground, compared to 201 yards for the Floyd County (2-7). Giles also picked off three interceptions.

John Teats opened the scoring with a 44-yard dash less than a minute into the contest. Brian Mann scored twice on runs and threw for Giles’ final score, a 19-yard pass to Dakoda Shrader. Tyler Perdue also ran to paydirt for the Spartans.

Giles concludes the regular season next Friday at Glenvar.

Abingdon 43, Tazewell 40

ABINGDON, Va. — Tazewell and the Abingdon Falcons fought a back-and-forth battle on Friday night with the Bulldogs coming up just three points short to fall to 2-7 on the season. Abingdon improves to 6-3.

Hunter Norris scored three touchdowns to lead the Falcons while quarterback Tyler Arnold completed 11 of 20 attempts for 152 yards and a touchdown.

Montcalm 15, Hannan 0

ASHTON — The Montcalm Generals trooped into Mason County and closed out their season on Friday with a shutout of the Wildcats, ending 3-7 for the year.

The only score of the first half was an early safety when Montcalm’s Brady Brown tackled the Hannan quarterback in the end zone for a 2-0 lead.

Colton Egnor scored for the Generals on a 13-yard run in the third, and Dakota Lanter added a fourth-quarter touchdown on a 20-yard run.

Lanter had 66 rushing yards on 13 carries and Egnor ran 12 times for 42 yards. Jason Grose had 12 rushes for 56 yards. Travis Duncan gained 11 yards on three carries.
