Mavericks volley past Raiders, Panthers

GARDNER — The long and the short of it Tuesday night was, don’t count out James Monroe on the volleyball court.

One of the shortest of the Lady Mavericks, Allison Lowe, and the tallest, Kayla Via, came up big in the final flurry to pull out the match against PikeView to conclude a “Dig for the Cure” cancer awareness evening at the school in Gardner.

Lowe served six points as her team took a late lead, and Via had two spikes and a block in the run as the Lady Mavs finished off their match with the host Panthers 16-25, 25-23, 25-23.

“Somehow we pulled it off. I’m still not sure exactly how,” said James Monroe coach Renee Jessee after the final whistle in the hot gym.

PikeView was in control for most of the first set, and had set point at 24-11, but James Monroe countered with six straight points. Hannah Cook then closed the initial set out for the Panthers by putting the ball down on the James Monroe side of the net.

In the second set, Brooklyn Burdette’s ace serve for the Lady Mavericks put them up 24-22 and Mikaila Moran spiked it to claim the set by the two-point margin and force a third encounter.

PikeView held leads of 7-2, 12-5 and 19-9 before the visitors began to take control with big plays from Via, Lowe, and Carter and Laine Shiflet. Breaking out of a 23-23 tie, the Lady Mavs got a point when a PikeView return landed just beyond the corner of the playing area. Via’s spike then ended the evening.

Jessee said, “I think we’ve picked it up a few notches in the last few weeks.”

PikeView began the evening beating Liberty High 25-17, 25-18. James Monroe went three sets to beat Liberty 22-25, 25-16, 25-15.

A spaghetti dinner hosted by the PikeView volleyball team to help with the medical costs of cancer patient Amber Dickerson raised $2,337.72, according to dinner organizer Tammy Cook. She said $500 in additional donations were also given to Dickerson, and $500 went to another person fighting cancer, Melana French.
