Bulldogs trip up Golden Knights 11-4

TAZEWELL, Va. — The host Tazewell Bulldogs scored nine runs in their last two at bats to take an 11-4 win over Mount View Saturday evening in the opening round of the 40th Coppinger Invitational Baseball Tournament played at Lou Peery Field.

Casey Lee, Brett Jones, Todd Mulkey and Lucas Parsons all had singles in a fifth inning onslaught that erased a 4-2 deficit and gave the Bulldogs a 7-4 lead heading into the top of the sixth.

Playing only the seventh game of the season, due to several postponements due to rain, snow and coach weather, veteran Tazewell head coach Lou Peery analyzed, “We’re late starters.  Right now we don’t know which pitches to hit and which pitches to let go.  As we play a little more and go on, maybe we’ll get the hang of it.”

Through the first four frames, the Bulldogs had four hits, but only two runs, but put together four hits in each of the last two, as well as five runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth.

Lee, catcher Chase Illig, Jones and shortstop Brody Dean led the offense with two safeties apiece, while Lee and Brett Powers both knocked in three runs.

Mount View took the 4-2 lead in the top of the fifth when Bryan Villaneuva and Caleb Webb drew back-to-back walks and Jarrett Cochran was hit by a pitch to load the bases with two outs.

Centerfielder Tashaan Vineyard’s deep fly to right eluded the Tazewell fielder, allowing all three runners to race home.  Vineyard scored moments later on Maurice Brown’s single to right center.

Freshman Bulldog starter Lucas Parsons went 4 2/3 innings, striking out 11 and walking only one before running into the trouble in the fifth.  He gave way to Tyler Myers who closed the door on any Mount View hopes after the fifth, in recording the win.

Remarked Mount View head coach Troy Hawks, who had the “interim” taken away from the title yesterday after former head coach Phillip Dunford resigned, “We put up four in the top of the inning (fifth) to take the lead and I told (assistant) Coach (Chris) Richardson, ‘We can’t afford to give up a big inning,’ and that’s exactly what we did, giving up five runs in that inning.”

Tazewell, now 2-5, will face PikeView Monday at 7 pm at Bowen Field in the second round of the Coppinger Tourney.

Mount View will put its 3-9 last on the line Monday in a doubleheader at home against Westside.
