PEARISBURG, Va. — Ian Mann, reigning Bluefield Daily Telegraph-Pocahontas Coal Association player of the week, ran for 283 yards on 21 carries and scored a touchdown in every quarter as the Giles Spartans pulled away in the second half to beat Radford 41-14 on Friday night.

Mann got the only score of the first quarter on a 1-yard run. He added a 48-yard touchdown scamper in the second period, after teammate Garrett Lee tallied on a 29-yard run.

Radford’s R.J. Jordan scored via a run and a pass reception to narrow the Spartans’ lead to 20-14 at halftime.

Those were the only points the visitors put on the board. Mann had scoring runs of 13 and 18 yards in the second half, and Giles’ Brett Whitlow ended the scoring with 5:06 left in the game on a 5-yard run. Whitlow ran for 106 yards on 17 carries.

The Spartans amassed 465 yards of offense, all on the ground. Giles attempted one pass which was incomplete. Radford quarterback Hunter Marshall was 7 for 15 passing for 109 yards.

Giles (9-1) finished the regular season with a 5-0 record and another Three Rivers District championship.

HINTON — Isaiah Brown ran 20 times for 120 yards and three touchdowns of 15, 6, and 26 yards, including the final score with 56 seconds left in the game. He also caught a 55-yard scoring pass.

All that production helped the Bobcats (7-3) into a likely playoff spot for the first time since 1997.

Both teams now await their playoff fate. Seedings will be determined late tonight after a slew of games rescheduled from Friday because of the effects of Hurricane Sandy.
