CLINTWOOD, Va. —
Transition was the name of the game for Clintwood.
The Greenwave blasted the Golden Wave, 95-66, in non-district play before a very small crowd Monday night at Howard Deel Gymnasium.
Robbie Mullins scored a career-high 38 points and was out in front of a Clintwood transition game that beat Grundy down the court most of the night.
Dalton Dahley hit his first three three-point tries in the first quarter and finished with 14 points for Clintwood, which hit 16 of its first 20 shots from the field, including a series of fast break lay-ups.
Charles McCoy and Dylan Billiter each scored 17 points for Grundy, which made an impressive 16-2 run to make it a one-point game at halftime.
The Golden Wave (2-16) could not slow the more experienced Greenwave down in the third quarter. Mullins was 7-for-7 from the field in the opening quarter, and all seven shots came in the paint.
Mullins led a 20-4 run to open the second half that gave Clintwood (10-10) a 64-47 lead. The final margin was the biggest.
“We go through spurts where we look pretty good, at least offensively,” Grundy coach Jeremy Ratliff said. “But we’re still just a young team where we don’t have experience, and we’re facing teams with a lot of seniors leading the way. And that makes a big difference.”
McCoy grabbed 16 rebounds and dished out nine assists. Another Grundy sophomore, Blake Cehajic, also posted a double-double with 11 points and 15 rebounds for Grundy, which held a whopping 51-31 edge on the boards.
Sophomore Baylen Dillow added 10 points for the Golden Wave. Tyler Ross added 13 points for the Greenwave.
