COUNCIL, Va. — Haysi’s got all the offense it needed from its big three and all the margin it needed from it defense.

The Tigers stayed unbeaten in Black Diamond District play with a 72-43 rout of Council Tuesday night.

Tyler Tipton scored a game-high 22 points, Peyton O’Quinn contributed a double-double with 16 points and 11 assists and freshman Hunter Sutherland pumped in 14 points to lead Haysi.

Pressure defense also played a big role in the Tigers maintaining a share of first place in the BDD.

Haysi (14-4, 7-0) forced 22 turnovers, mostly out of its zone press, including three straight in the second quarter and three in a row again in the third period.

“We backed our press off a little on them early, because we figured (Council) would take better care of the ball (at home),” Haysi coach David Robinette said. “About six minutes into the game we decided to go back to our normal press and be more aggressive, and I think it got them tired.”

The Tigers scored 13 unanswered points starting late in the opening period to build a 27-12 lead and extended it to 59-39 with a lay-up by Sutherland against Council pressure early in the fourth quarter.

The final margin was the biggest.

Cameron Presley scored 14 second-half points and led the Cobras (7-11, 3-5) with 20 points. Josh Viers added 10 points for Council, which appeared tired after losing on the road at Grundy the night before.

“Give Tyler Tipton and Hunter Sutherland credit, they shot lights out and Haysi executed well,” Council coach Patrick Wade said. “We just didn’t take care of the basketball.”
