BLUEFIELD — Richlands senior Todd McGlothlin, left, has been chosen to the Virginia High School Coaches Association’s All-Group AA football team as a first team defensive end. Honaker placed six players on the Division 1 squad, including first teamers Chandler Miller (OL), Deandre Williams (DL) and Jordan Hess (DB) and second teamers Joshua Dye (C), Ty Hall (QB) and Payton Ball (DE). Haysi’s Cody Yates was a second team defensive lineman...Several area players were recognized on the Division 2 team as listed on Thursday, including Michael Thompson (1st team, Graham, DL), Ian Mann (1st, RB, Giles), Wayne Mutter (1st, P, Grundy), along with Hunter Cook (2nd team, Graham, LB) and Kearsley Dillon (2nd, OL, Giles).
Former Tazewell Bulldogs and Bluefield College standout Omar “Juice” Reed is currently a member of the Maine Red Claws in the National Basketball Developmental League. Reed, who played for the Austin Toros of the NBDL last season, has played in 16 games for the 13-8 Red Claws, averaging 2.8 points and 2.7 rebounds a game. He also has 10 steals, six blocked shots and eight assists. Reed, who was the AAC player of the year for the Rams in 2009, played for the Medway Park Crusaders in the United Kingdom in 2011. He averaged 6.6 points and 3.5 boards last year for the Toros.
Brad Strong has resigned as baseball coach at Richlands. Strong has led the Blue Tornado to success in the Southwest District and in Region IV competition. Strong was able to coach both of his sons, Bradley and Reece, who are now playing baseball at Western Carolina.
