Grundy surges past Hurley

GRUNDY, Va. — If you missed the bottom half of the third inning you missed most of the action in this one.

A 10-run third lifted Grundy to a 14-4 Black Diamond District win over Hurley Friday afternoon at Enoch’s Branch.

Taylor Cole’s bases-clearing double was the key hit in the third, when the Golden Wave notched five of their eight hits and Hurley committed the only two errors of the game as Grundy took an 11-1 lead.

Cole added an RBI single to knock in four runs in the decisive inning. Grundy (2-2) matched Hurley’s three runs in the fourth as the Wave shortened the game to five innings under the 10-run mercy rule.

“Cole had made good contact all year, teams had just made the plays on him,” Grundy coach Scotty Bostic said. “He got some big hits for us with runners on base. Everybody hit well and found some holes there in the third.”

Freshman Dylan Wolford delivered a two-run single and Daniel Tiller added an RBI double in the big rally, when Grundy sent 14 batters to the plate.

Chris Hardin had a solid double in the three-run fourth for Hurley’s only hit. The Rebels (0-2) took advantage of walks and a wild pitch to score all four of their runs.

It was just the second game of the season for Hurley, which plays several freshmen and sophomores and played Friday without two starters who missed the game because of a death in the family.

“We’re a young team and I guess you have to crawl before you can walk,” Hurley coach Mark Cooper said. “But we have the numbers to build around.

“We had one bad inning. The rest of it was all right.”

Jordan McCoy drove in two runs with a single, while Charles McCoy added a run-scoring single in the fourth and finished 2-for-3 at the plate for Grundy.

Nick Travis walked seven, but struck out 10 in four innings and got the win. He also drew three of the eight walks issued to Wave batters and was one of six players who scored twice for Grundy.

Charles McCoy fanned the side in the fifth. Hardin went the distance and took the loss.

The two clubs meet again Monday at Hurley.
