District changes proposed by VHSL

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — The Southwest District would lose Carroll County High School and shrink to four schools in the fall of 2013 if the draft of a Virginia High School League alignment “model” plan remains unchanged.

The plan, discussed last Thursday by VHSL officials, was posted on the league website on Monday.

Schools wanting modifications made to the plan must submit their request and a rationale in writing by Feb. 16. Requests are scheduled to be discussed at the next meeting of the VHSL alignment committee on Feb. 27.

Carroll County would move into the River Ridge District, joining Blacksburg, Christiansburg and some Roanoke-area Group AA schools. The Southwest District would then consist of Tazewell (615 students), Richlands (731), Marion (710) and Abingdon (881).

The student numbers were recorded on Sept. 30, 2011.

The Black Diamond District would include Council (103), Hurley (177), Twin Valley (226), Haysi (263), Honaker (381) and Grundy (513).

The Mountain Empire District would consist of Bland County, combining the 305 students at Rocky Gap and Bland high schools, along with Narrows (229), Galax (393), Fort Chiswell (460), Graham (545) and Grayson County (589).

Giles (544) would remain in the Three Rivers District.
