Falcons top Blues, Green Wave nips Bears

RICHLANDS, Va. — Makenley Davis scored two goals on free kicks and had three assists to lead the Blue Tornado past the Graham G-Girls, Friday night at Ernie Hicks Stadium.

Cassidy Richardson added two goals and Nadia Ashiuq one for the Blues.

Chelsey Minton scored Graham’s lone goal.

Richlands is now 7-1-1, their only loss to Graham, while the G-Girls are now 9-3.

The Blue Tornado will host Tazewell on Tuesday for Senior Night.

Abingdon 9, Richlands 2

WARDELL, Va. — The Abingdon Falcons scored five runs in the first inning and went on to defeat the Richlands Blue Tornado 9-2, Friday evening in Southwest District baseball action.

Chase Ray, Zach Yates and Chad Lester each had a single and a double for the Blues, while Andrew Francisco and Jacob Doss had two hits apiece for Abingdon.

Richlands (7-6, 3-2) hosts Tazewell on Tuesday.

NARROWS, Va. — The Narrows Green Wave was down to its last strike when Jason Blankenship walked to start a seventh inning rally that led the Green Wave past Bland County in Mountain Empire District baseball action Friday.

Following Blankenship’s walk , Kyle Hall came on to pinch run. Cortland Caldwell drew a walk and then Will Patteson singled to score Hall to tie the game. Rodney Perdue then followed with a single up the middle to score Caldwell with the game-winning run.

Patteson was the winning pitcher and struck out 15 Bears. Aaron Rose was the losing pitcher, he allowed only four Narrows hits and struck out 13.

Track & Field

GRUNDY, Va. — Morgan Hall placed first in the shot (34’33/4”) and discus (98’0”), leading Grundy to a girls track team victory in a meet held at Grundy High School on Thursday.

Grundy scored 124.5 points, barely eding out Haysi, which had 121. Richlands was a distant third with 58.5.

Other multiple event winners included Haysi’s Erin Hyden (high jump-4’7”, long jump-13’5 1/4”, triple jump-29’4”) and Maggie Edwards (400 meters-1:08, 800 meters-2:50), Hurley’s Rachel McCoy (1,600-6:11, 3,200-13:43) and Megan Mullins of Twin Valley (100  hurdles-20.77, 300 hurdles-1:00.84).

Richlands was led by Rachel Alley in field events, finishing second in the discus (73’0”) and shot put (30’11”).

Haysi captured the boys event with 192 points, with Richlands finishing second with 61 and third place going to Hurley with 60.

Leading Haysi was Jeffrey Bowen, who won the high jump-5’10” and long jump-19’2 1/2”, and Heath Mullins, who captured the 100 hurdles-16.1 and triple jump-39’5”.

The Black Diamond District meet will be held on Wednesday at Nelson Memorial Stadium in Grundy.
