Regional tennis swept by Beavers

ATHENS — The Bluefield boys and girls tennis teams advanced to the Class AA state tournament by wrapping up the Region III championship on Wednesday at Concord University.

The Bluefield boys easily out-distanced Wyoming East 17-11 to claim the team title. No. 1 singles Justin Freund, No. 2 Jose Tarin and No. 3  Paul Hoffman are undefeated on the season.

In doubles play, No. 1 Freund-Tarin and No. 3 Hoffman-Tyler Myers are unbeaten.

Bluefield’s No. 4 player, Austin Tyree, made it to the regional finals.

The Bluefield girls also won, defeating Independence 19-12.

All four Bluefield singles players, Molly Lovern, Alex Lewis, Sarah Brady and Claire Bailey, won, while the doubles teams of Lovern-Bailey and Brady-Brooke Cundiff also captured regional titles.

Lovern is undefeated on the season in singles play. Bluefield’s No. 3 doubles position, which has included Brady, Cundiff and Borden Thomas is also unbeaten.

Bluefield will participate in the Class AA state meet on May 9-11 in Charleston.



Softball

James Monroe

wins section

LINDSIDE — The James Monroe Mavericks won the Class AA, Region III, Section 2 championship Wednesday with a pair of wins over the PikeView Panthers, 2-0 and 8-0.

In the opening game Mikayla Wickline tossed a complete game two-hitter for the win.

PikeView’s Haleigh Compton took the loss as she scattered five hits.

In the section deciding win Wickline and Rebecca Ratliff combined to toss another two-hitter.

Megan Bailey led James Monroe with two hits and two RBIs.

Samantha Meadow was dealt the loss for PikeView.

In each game PikeView’s only hits were by Lyndsay Hatfield and Hope Nester.

James Monroe will begin regional play next week.

BLUEFIELD — Justin Carter recorded nine strikeouts and had two doubles and two RBIs to lead the Bluefield Beavers to a 10-3 win over the Graham G-Men, Wednesday at Bowen Field.

Logan Lineberry also had two hits, including a double for the Beavers who host River View today at 6 p.m. It will be Senior Night for Bluefield.

Tommy Lovell had two hits and two RBIs, and Spencer Sheets and Logan Kirk each had a hit for the G-Men.

HINTON — The Montcalm Generals beat Summers County, Tuesday evening. No further details were available.



Girls Soccer

Richlands 6,

Carroll County 0

RICHLANDS, Va. — Cassidy Richardson and Nadia Sheets each scored three goals, leading the Lady Blues past the Cavaliers.

Richardson now has 27 goals on the season, and has reportedly tied the state record for career hat tricks.

Richlands will host Abingdon on Thursday.



Boys soccer

Graham 7,  Richlands 1

RICHLANDS, Va. — The Graham G-Men improved to 6-1-1 on the season wih a  win, Wednesday at Richlands.

Forrest Yates had two goals andtwo assists, Alex Aiello hadtwo goals and three assists, and Samuel Stowers and Doug Weimer each had a goal and Joey Littlejohn an assist for the G-Men. Graham’s seventh goal was scored by Richlands on themselves.

Graham returns to the pitch this evening at Galax in a Mountain Empire District contest.
