Prep roundup: Graham rallies for first baseball win of season

RURAL RETREAT, Va. — Jacob Simpson worked six innings of five-hit baseball and Spencer Sheets and Corey Monninger had two hits each, leading Graham to a 5-3 non-district win over Rural Retreat on a cold and windy Wednesday evening.

Graham fell behind 3-0 in the first, but rallied for five runs between the third and sixth innings. Simpson struck out six batters in picking up the win, while Jonathan Kirk worked the seventh for the save.

Graham (1-1) will host Giles today and Bluefield on Friday, weather permitting.

Rural Retreat dropped to 1-1 on the season.

Girls Tennis

BLUEFIELD — The Bluefield girls won its season opener without losing a point against the Raiders at the wind-swept Bluefield City Courts.

Molly Lovern, Alex Lewis, Brooke Cundiff and Emma Cole all had singles victories for the Beavers.

Bluefield will host Liberty today, and visit Wyoming East and Westside on Saturday.

BLUEFIELD — Justin Freund and the Bluefield boys tennis team also started the season out with a shutout of the Raiders at the wind-swept Bluefield City Courts.

With two players out with sickness, Freund (8-0), Austin Tyree (8-1), Jordan Volmar (8-1) and Tyler Myers (8-0) earned singles wins.

Doubles victories came from Freund-Myers (8-2) and Tyree and Volmar (8-2).

Bluefield will host Independence today, and visit both Wyoming East and Westside on Saturday.
