SALEM, Va. —
With the VHSL switching to a six-class system next year, Grundy is making a move to win every Group A mat title they participated in, as the Golden Wave held a 78-61.5 advantage over Strasburg after the quarterfinal round of the 43rd annual VHSL Group A wrestling tournament at the Salem Civic Center on Friday.
The Wave advanced seven wrestlers into Saturday morning’s semifinal round, including Maverick Coleman (106 pounds), Austin Hurley (120), Austin Compton (126), Trey Smith (132), Justin Street (138), Elliott Pedigo (145) and Dylan Raines (152).
The second place Rams advanced five to the semis, including two defending state finalists who will match up with Grundy in the morning, including Hunter Dean (106) who was the state runnerup at his age group last year and Nick Campbell (120), who was the state champion last year at 113 pounds.
Also making the semis were 113 pounders Jacob Wynn of Rural Retreat and Graham's Dustin Hagerman. That duo will meet this morning in the semifinals.
The championship matches are scheduled to start this evening at 6:30 p.m.
