Grundy and Honaker girls advance in BDD play

CLINCHCO, Va. — Honaker 48    Haysi 35

The Honaker Tigers defeated the Haysi Tigers for the third time in 10 days in Thursday’s first semfinal contest.

No one scored in double figures for either team but Honaker (10-13) made up for it with defense.

Most of the scoring came off turnovers, on both ends, The Tigers used fullcourt pressure and forced Haysi (11-10) into 14 first-half turnovers.

It fueled a 20-2 run that gave Honaker a 30-15 halftime lead.

Haysi made just three shots before halftime, but forced a few turnovers with its halfcourt defense, but could get no closer than 38-31 after a 3 by Hannah Mondrage with 4:41 remaining.

Erin Hyden led Haysi with nine points. Morgan Stevens paced Honaker with nine points.

Haysi finished with 24 turnovers. Honaker turned the ball over 19 times.

Haysi will face Twin Valley for third place in the tournament on Saturday.
