CU golfers win Northern Regional

Bluefield State takes fourth place

WHEELING — The men’s golf team from Concord University fought through foul weather on Monday to claim the West Virginia Conference Northern Regional Championship, seven strokes ahead of the University of Charleston.

Concord shot rounds of 301 on both Sunday and Monday from the Robert Trent Jones championship tees at Speidel Golf Course near Wheeling. The 602 was 34-over par on the  7,001-yard course.

Bluefield State College finished fourth with rounds of 304 and 307, for a 611 total.

The weather made it quite a taxing couple of days. Jamin Smith of Charleston took the individual title with a five-over par 147. Concord’s Matthew Morgan was one stroke higher at 148.

Two Concordians, Evan Muscari and Stefan Labruschagne, tied for fifth with identical scores of 150.

Nick Dent and Jeff McGraw, both from Bluefield State College, tied for sixth-best individuals with scores of 151. Chandler Beavers of the Big Blues and Shepherd’s Zach Weber tied for ninth with a 152.

Concord also won the Central Regional on Sept. 25. Muscari and Labruschagne were the top two golfers at that event.

The fall championship tournament for WVIAC men’s golf is scheduled for next Sunday and Monday at Glade Springs Resort in Raleigh County.
