TAZEWELL, Va. — Ouch!

In a hard-hitting homecoming, Virginia High handed homestanding Tazewell bumps, bruises, and a 35-0 defeat Friday in non-district action.

The fleet-footed Bearcats used big plays and tough tackling to move in front early and maintain momentum behind a dazzling running attack. Virginia High (4-3) piled up 185 yards on the ground in the first half against THS (0-6) and never looked back after a pair of first quarter touchdowns.

Tradell Reisler, who finished with 10 carries for 59 yards and two scores, put V-High in front to stay on a 25-yard scamper around left end with 11:02 on the first quarter clock. Gray Mumpower drilled the first of his five extra points for a 7-0 advantage. The drive took just two plays.

Another Bearcat score was added when Justin Brown exploded up the middle for a 47-yard touchdown with 7:16 remaining in the period. Brown finished the game leading all runners with 15 carries for 147 total yards. Mumpower added the PAT for a 14-0 advantage.

Brown’s second TD was a four-yard dash, after he raced 50 to set up a first and goal situation late in the first half. Mumpower again kicked the point after and VHS moved in front 21-0 at the 7:20 mark of the opening half.

Neither team scored in the third quarter but the Bearcats added a pair of six pointers in the final frame.

Reisler bolted over for a four-yard touchdown on a fourth-and-goal play with 10:02 left and freshman fullback Caleb Stone capped the scoring when he plowed into the end zone on a six-yard TD run with only 1:48 left on the clock. Mumpower kicked both extra points.

Tazewell suffered some injuries. Both starting quarterback Cody McCann and running back Malik Davis left the game early in the third period. McCann had a head injury and Davis hurt his knee.

Lineman Colby Scarberry was knocked out with a separated shoulder. All three are likely out for at least a couple of weeks. Jalen Jordan also had a leg injury but is not expected to miss any action.

“It was a hard loss,” said Bulldog coach Shane Allen. “I told the kids that we can’t always control some of the things that happen out there on the field. All we can do is play hard, block, tackle, and do our jobs. The rest of it is out of our hands.

“I was proud of the effort we got tonight. Some of our players had to come in there in the second half and they gave it a good effort. We’ll work them in this week and make the adjustments.”

Jacob McReynolds paced the Dogs with 73 yards on the ground including a 39-yard run in the third quarter. McCann finished with 23 yards passing, but came close to a couple of touchdown passes before on near misses before being brought down.

John Wayne Absher had a pair of impressive first downs for the Dogs, one on a pass from McCann and another on a run.

Virginia High led in total yards, 264-110, all on the ground. Tazewell was called for 7 penalties totaling 53 yards and VHS was flagged six times for 70 yards.
