Planeta’s home run leads Orioles past Sox

BLUEFIELD — Bowen Field was hit with a rainstorm at 7:55 p.m. Tuesday night. For 41 minutes, the teams waited for the rain to stop and play to resume.

When it did, the Bluefield Orioles picked up where they left off. They took advantage of their 11 hits and kept the Bristol Sox from taking advantage of their 10, leaving the ballpark with a 6-1 win, their second in a row.

Bluefield starter Jesse Beal dealt with the delay and the Sox very well. He went six innings, giving up one run and six hits with three strikeouts and no walks. With the win, his record improved to 5-3.

Beal’s Bristol counterpart Andre Rienzo had a more difficult time. He was unable to control Bluefield’s batters, throwing 57 pitches in just three innings. In those innings, he gave up four runs and seven hits with two strikeouts. He did not return after the rain delay, leaving him with a loss and a 1-6 record.

Bluefield’s bats were powerfully potent Tuesday night. Mikey Planeta went 2-for-4 with his third home run of the season, four RBIs and two runs. Kipp Schutz went 3-for-4 with a run. Not to be outdone, Corey Thomas went 2-for-5, knocking in a run.

Bristol also had solid individual offensive performances. Trayce Thompson went 3-for-4, Brady Shoemaker went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Leighton Pangilinan also went 2-for-4. But Bristol left nine runners on base compared to Bluefield’s three and that failure to turn those runners into runs was their downfall.

The Orioles struck first with a two-out rally in the opening inning. Planeta reached on a single, then Mike Flacco ripped a double down the left field line to score Planeta from first and give Bluefield an early 1-0 lead.

Bristol tied the score in the top of the third inning thanks to Daniel Wagner’s smart base running. After leading off the inning with a single, Wagner swiped second then advanced to third and home on consecutive ground outs.
