BEAVER — Ike Judy can start packing his bags for a trip to Wheeling next week.

The James Monroe senior is bound for the state high school golf tournament after firing the low round of the day at Monday’s Class AA, Region 3 tournament at the par-72 Grandview Country Club.

His 3-under par 69 was the best among the 28 golfers from 10 southern West Virginia schools, cinching his berth in the states. T.J. Stacy of River View also qualified; his 83 was the second-best individual score among golfers not on the top two teams.

Those teams were Westside, with a team total of 241, and Wyoming East, just one shot back. Both teams qualified as a group for state competition. James Monroe was in third place with a 247.

The state tournament is next Tuesday and Wednesday at the Speidel Course on the grounds of Oglebay Park.

Honaker High moves on to Va. regional

for the Daily Telegraph

ABINGDON, Va. — Northwood made Honaker sweat it out at the end, but it was worth a little extra perspiration for the Tigers.

Holston dominated the first-ever Crooked Road Conference golf tournament, topping Honaker by 29 strokes, 327-356 Monday at Glenrochie Country Club.

The second-place finish earned the Tigers a berth in the next round, the region, Oct. 7 at Draper Valley in Pulaski and it wasn’t decided until the final group reached the clubhouse.

Holston had the three lowest individual scorers, including medalist Conrad Thacker’s 75. Only five other broke 90 on the 18-hole course and three of them came from Honaker.

In addition to the top two teams the top six individuals not on those teams move on to regional play.

“We knew we were probably going for second,” said Honaker coach Marcus Dunham, whose club won the Black Diamond District tournament last year. “It came to the last few golfers and we were sweating it down to the end.

"This was probably only the second or third time the kids have played this course, so I was pleased with our scores as few times as we’ve played here before.”

Jacob Coleman (86), Tyler Hale, (87) and Austin Benfield (89) led the way for the Tigers. Northwood was led by Ty Hall (86) and Justin Moore (88), who each qualified for the region as did teammate Dylan Jones (90).

Honaker finished 15 strokes ahead of Northwood (371).

Three BDD golfers with little if any experience at Glenrochie earned the other three individual spots in regional play next Monday, including freshman Jacob Owens of Twin Valley. He shot a 44 on the front nine but finished at an even 100.

“Playing in a tournament like this is just fun, it’s a joy to play golf,” said Owens, part of an all-freshman Panther squad, the first golf team at Twin Valley in several years. “Having a team again was a big surprise.

“On the front nine I was putting a lot better. I think I got a little tired on the back nine.”

Haysi’s Drake Howell (97) and Dylan Slemp (103) also qualified. Slemp moved on when teammate Morgan Thomas, who shot a 101, withdrew from the Region tournament in advance because of an illness in the family.
