Volleyball: Graham sweeps Bluefield for morale-boosting win

MCA falls to Greater Beckley

BLUEFIELD — The Graham G-Girls volleyball team took a short road trip Monday evening, across the state line to the Bluefield High School gym, and swept their cross-town rivals by scores of 25-13, 25-15 and 25-13.

“Our hitters did excellent, especially Rebecca Day and Emily Gallinger,” said new Graham coach Omi Oakes. She noted the sets provided by McKenzie Meade and kills by Erika Jollay as key parts of the G-Girls victory.

Bluefield coach Gregg Breisch said that freshman Jamaikah Wallace showed “good attitude, good tips, and good spikes,” and got a good night of serving from Amara Breisch.

Graham (2-6) picked up its second victory of the fall, but Oakes said, “It helps our morale. The next six or seven games are conference games. This prepares us.”

The G-Girls will be at home today to take on Fort Chiswell, while the Beavers’ schedule shows a home match today at 6 p.m. with James Monroe.

The junior varsity match between Graham and Bluefield began with a 25-0 win by the G-Girls, with Melanie Anderson serving all the points in the game. Graham took that match.
