Silviano's bat boosts Jays over Mariners

PULASKI, Va. — John Silviano was at it again in the batter’s box Monday evening for the Bluefield Blue Jays, driving in three runs including the winning scores in the ninth inning to wrap up a 4-2 Appalachian League win at Calfee Park.

In their second meeting of 2013, Bluefield (3-2) and Pulaski (1-4) combined for 15 hits, after smacking the ball around for 30 on Sunday. Monday’s game was tied twice before the visitors’ final-inning rally.

Silviano hit his second solo home run in two games, a blast over right field, to forge a 1-1 tie in the second, after Pulaski’s Zach Shank tripled and scored in the opening inning on Isaiah Yates’ RBI groundout.

In the fourth, Derrick Loveless led off with a triple to left and gave Bluefield a 2-1 lead when he scored on a wild pitch.

Pulaski starter Jose Flores allowed just three hits in six innings and struck out seven Blue Jays, but left trailing 2-1.

Scott Silverstein, a recent alumnus of the University of Virginia, got the starting nod for the Blue Jays. The 6-foot-5 left-hander handled six innings and allowed one earned run and four hits with four strikeouts.

The Mariners knotted the game 2-2 in the seventh, soon after Francisco Gracesqui took the mound in relief of Silverstein. Wilton Martinez doubled, took third on a sacrifice fly, and reached the plate on the game’s only  error, by Bluefield first baseman Matt Dean.

With one out in the top of the ninth, Mitch Nay and Dawel Lugo got back-to-back singles off Pulaski reliever Rafael Pineda. Silviano brought both home with a double to right.

Bluefield closer Brady Dragmire handled the bottom of the ninth and allowed a single to Yates, who was erased on a double play. Dragmire ended the game by striking out Luke Guamaccia, and picked up his first Appy League save.

Loveless stayed hot at the plate  with a double and a triple.

The Blue Jays conclude their series in Pulaski tonight with the first pitch expected at 7 p.m. Shane Dawson (1-0, 0.00 ERA) is scheduled to start on the mound for the Jays.

Bluefield hosts the Burlington Royals on Wednesday through Friday at Bowen Field.
