Hillyer claims age group title in BRJGT

BLUEFIELD, Va. — Tyler Hillyer of Princeton took top honors in the oldest age group during the Blue Ridge Junior Golf Tour Championship that concluded on Tuesday at Fincastle on the Mountain.

Director Dewayne Belcher was pleased with another successful season for the BRJGT.

“This is the place where the Tour started and it is always a joy to return,” Belcher said. “The Blue Ridge Junior Golf Tour appreciates the continued support and contribution that Fincastle on the Mountain makes to us.”

Belcher also expressed appreciation to ‘all the sponsors and golf establishments for their continued support of junior golf.’

Ages 16-18

Hillyer followed up a 72 at the Tazewell County Country Club on Monday with a 78 at Fincastle to finish with a two-day total of 150 to defeat a trio of other golfers by 10 strokes.

He defeated the Tazewell duo of Blake Hash and Colin Hancock, along with Andrew Simonsen of Johnson City, Tn., all of whom shot 160.

Hash was selected as the Tour’s Player of the Year in the 16-to-18-year-old age group. He was joined on a Tour All-Star team by Hillyer, Hancock, Jared Porter of Princeton and Graham Dillon of Wytheville, Va.

Ages 14-15

Dylan Wooten of Sparta, N.C. fired an 81 on Tuesday to win the 14-15-year-old age group by five strokes over Maxwell Dillon of Wytheville, Va.

Joseph Clark trailed Dillon’s 160 with a 161.

Age group player of year: Alex Conner, Copper Hill, Va.  Age group all-star team: Dillon, Clark, Joel Carlos-Bluefield, Steven Parker-Princeton.

Ages 12-13

Camp Creek resident Carson Proffitt captured the 12-13-year-old age group with a two-dasy total score of 158. He shot an 80 on Tuesday to defeat Ben Carroll of Blacksburg, Va. by four strokes. Noah Clark of Pearisburg was third at 164.

Age group player of year: Carroll. Age group all-star team: Carroll, Profitt, Christopher Zhang-Blacksburg, Va., B Davis-Radford, Va.

Ages 10-12

 Beckley’s Patrick Smith took top honors with a two-day total of 78 in the 10-12-year-old age group. He fired a 37 on Tuesday to go with the 41 on Monday in Tazewell.

Noah Moler of Newport, Va. finished second with an 87, while Wytheville’s Peyton Coe was third with a 91.

Age group player of year: Channing Blevins, Wytheville, Va.  Age group all-star team: Blevins, Coe, Moler, Avery Alexander-Christiansburg, Va., Jason Hall-Dublin, Va.

Ages 9-under

Wytheville, Va. resident Benson Blevins fired a 53 on Tuesday to finish with a two-day total of 99. He finished four strokes ahead of Aiden Alexander of Christiansburg.

Age group player of year: Blevins. Age group all-star team: Blevins, Alexander, Parker Hopkins, Braden Watkins, Bluefield.
