Golden Knights out-rank Montcalm Generals at the Castle

WELCH — A coach just never knows how his team will react to “Special Events,” such as homecoming in football or Senior Night in basketball.

Mount View head coach Gary Brown just shook his head Wednesday night after the Golden Knights recovered from a slow start,  that included 4-for 20 shooting from the floor in the first quarter, to end up taking a 52-29 win over the Montcalm Generals on Senior Night at the Ergie Smith Court.

The Generals, who showed textbook execution of the pick-and-roll for their first two buckets, led 4-0 after 1:16 of the first and 7-3 at the 5:12 mark, following a Tyler Goins trey.

Brown decided to shake things up, going to his bench for answers to the early Montcalm lead.

Junior Juwan Diggs responded with the final six points for the opening quarter for Mount View, including a deuce following a steal with 38 ticks remaining to give the Knights their first lead of the game at 9-8, one they would not relinquish the rest of the way.

The View concluded what became a dozen consecutive points run with four straight buckets to open the second, en route to taking a 24-15 advantage at the break.

Sophomore Kenneth Brown scored seven of his eight points in the opening half, as the Golden Knight bench accounted for the other seventeen points for that 24-15 lead.

Assessed second year Montcalm head coach Matt Smith, “Offensively early, we were able to get the ball inside, but just stopped, whether it was defensive pressure, or of our own doing.”

The Knights kept the pressure on in the final sixteen minutes, outgunning their guests 28-14 for their sixth win against fifteen losses.

Diggs, who finished with 23 points, led the View, as 36 of the final 52 Knight points came from subs.

Brown, who had eight points, pulled 10 rebounds, as Mount View grabbed 47 misfires, while limiting the Generals to 21.

Tyler Goins was the lone twin digit scorer for the 2-16 Generals.

Speaking of his team’s awakening offensively, Mount View head coach Gary Brown said, “We got a couple steals and a couple easy baskets and that kind of got us going.”

The Knights will host James Monroe, Friday night at 7 in the opening game of the Class AA Region III Section 2 tournament, while Montcalm will travel to Seth to face Sherman Saturday evening in its Class A section opener.
