Carnett achieves national honor

Staff report

NEW ORLEANS — Shawnee Carnett, a Concord University senior, is the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association’s NCAA Division II National Athlete of the Week, the organization announced Monday.

She earned the honor by hitting an NCAA automatic qualifying mark in the 800-meter run at the Armory Collegiate Invitational last weekend. The all-American and former national champion recorded a school-record time of 2:08.04, which was 2.45 seconds faster than the automatic mark.

The time was converted to 2:09.52 for championship qualifying purposes, but is currently the fastest 800-meter time in all of NCAA Division II.
