ELIZABETHTON, Tenn. —
There were no fireworks in the Bluefield Blue Jays’ bats on the Fourth of July.
Elizabethton starting pitcher Chih-Wei Hu struck out nine Blue Jays and allowed two singles in six innings, and three relievers each pitched one inning of no-hit ball, as the Twins took a 5-0 win on Friday in front of 1,591 fans at Joe O’Brien Field.
Richard Urena and Dan Jansen got Bluefield’s hits. The Twins (9-6) allowed only three base runners, one arriving on first due to the game’s only error.
Matt Smoral pitched the first four innings for the Blue Jays (6-9), striking out five Twins but giving up seven hits, two walks and five earned runs to take the pitching loss. Each of the three Bluefield relief pitchers gave up just one hit each, and no further runs.
Tanner English led Elizabethton with a 3 for 4 day that included a triple and two runs batted in. The Twins finished with 10 hits.
The Blue Jays will leave Tennessee behind for the next three weeks after today’s 6 p.m. game at Elizabethton. Bluefield begins a six-game home stand on Sunday, beginning with a visit from the Burlington Royals.
