PULASKI, Va. —
The Princeton Rays recorded their third straight win on Sunday evening, defeating the Pulaski Mariners 5-3 at historic Calfee Park.
Princeton starting pitcher Jose Alonzo put in five innings on the mound. He struck out five Mariners and allowed six hits but only one run, when Estarlyn Morales was awarded a trip to the plate on a balk.
Alonzo is now 2-0 on the season with an earned run average of 1.20.
Thomas Milone turned the game’s first single into a run when he scored in the first inning on a play that included two errors by Pulaski first baseman Carlton Tanabe. Milone tripled in Princeton’s three-run second inning, bringing Enmanuel Paulino and Riley Unroe home.
The Rays (6-5) made it 5-1 in the sixth when Cristian Toribio doubled and got home on a single by Unroe.
Peter Miller took the mound for Pulaski (6-5) in the seventh and retired six of the first seven batters he faced.
Rays pitcher Damion Carroll gave up just one hit in working two innings in relief of Alonzo.
Kyle McKenzie, who pitched the eighth, ran into tough sledding in the eighth. He allowed four hits and two earned runs — on a wild pitch and an RBI single by Jay Baum — before getting the last two outs of the inning.
Princeton sent Justin McCalvin out for the bottom of the ninth, and he retird the side in order to pick up his second save of the season.
Milone ended 2 for 3 with two RBI for Princeton, which collected 11 hits for the second straight day. Toribio and Carter Burgess were both 2 for 4 and Unroe was 2 for 5.
The Mariners were 2 for 13 with runners in scoring position. Morales was 2 for 4 at bat. Pulaski starter Taylor Byrd took the loss.
The two teams wrap up June with a 7 p.m. game tonight in Pulaski. Princeton plays in Bluefield on Tuesday, then has Wednesday off.
