Warriors prevail

Southern W.Va. blanks SC United at East River

EAST RIVER — The Southern West Virginia King’s Warriors stayed unbeaten at home after coming away with a 2-0 victory over the SC United Bantams, Saturday night at the East River Soccer Complex.

Bennie Bardales and Gideon Asante scored for Southern West Virginia while goalie Alex Guyer earned the King’s Warriors' first shutout of the season while making his second consecutive start and making one save.

Southern West Virginia (2-3-2 for 8 points) got on the board first as Lewis Grant crossed a ball deep in the box and Bardales there to blast the shot home for a 1-0 King's Warriors lead which held to the half. The King's Warriors out shot the Bantams (1-5-2 for 5 points) in the first half 5-2.

SC United tried to press in the second half to get the equalizing goal, but the King’s Warriors defense hung on to preserve the shutout. The King’s Warriors got a very late insurance goal in the 89th minute as Asante took a feed from Brian Ramirez and deked SC United goalie Barrett Neilsen to score and make the score a 2-0 final.

The King's Warriors will hit the road again for a pair of games next weekend. Southern West Virginia will take on the Carolina Dynamo Saturday night in Greensboro with kickoff set for 7:00 p.m. The following night, Sunday, June 22 the King's Warriors will be in Columbia, South Carolina to close out their three-game season series with the SC United Bantams with kickoff at 6:00 p.m.

The King's Warriors' next home game will be Saturday, June 28 when Southern West Virginia will host the Carolina Dynamo with kickoff at 7:00 p.m. at the East River Soccer Complex.
