Track and field competitors find success in regional

BLUEFIELD, Va. — Three area high school students placed in the top four in regional track and field events held last weekend.

Graham’s Kristin Compton was second in the 3,200-meter run and Grundy’s Morgan Hall was second in the discus and fourth in the shot put in the Region 2A West meet at Lee High School.

In the Region 1A West meet at Radford University, Amber Eaton of Bland County placed third in the 300 hurdles and sixth in the 100 hurdles.

Compton finished the two miles in 3:33.90, and also placed sixth in the 1,600 meters (6:00.30).

Hall of placed second in the discus (107-10) and fourth in the shot put (33-9).

Virginia High won the girls team title with 80 1/2 points, followed by Gate City with 77 1/2. Giles placed fifth with 56 1/2, while Grundy was 12th with 13. Graham was tied for 13th with 11. Tazewell was tied for 20th with 3.

In boys competition, Marion followed up its Southern Empire Conference team title with a 2A West team crown with 80 points, followed by Chatham with 64 1/4. Giles was eighth with 37 points. Graham and Richlands brought up the rear, tying for 20th with 1 point each.

In Region 1A West competition last Saturday at Radford, Eaton placed third in the 300 hurdles in 54.99 and sixth in the 100 hurdles (19.64).

George Wythe won the girls team title with 113 points, followed closely by Radford with 109. Bland County was tied for 16th with 6 points. The highest finishing regional team was Haysi, which was seventh with 27.

In boys competition, Radford was first with 140, followed by Auburn with 85. The top regionally-based club was Haysi in ninth place with 26 points.

Both the 2A and 1A state track meets will be held on Friday and Saturday at Radford University.
