The Bulldogs fell just short of pulling the upset.

Taylor Carmichel hit a 3-pointer from the left corner as the buzzer sounded to give Daniel Boone a win over Tazewell in the opening game Virginia High Borderline Classic

“We just didn’t finish,” said Tazewell coach Jason Southworth. “They kind of hit a lucky shot. It’s one of those where we should have won the game.”

Tazewell (1-3) had a 39-36 lead in the fourth quarter, but went almost five minutes without scoring. The Trailblazers went on a 7-0 run to take a 43-39 lead with a minute remaining. Taylor Catron finally got the lid off the basket for Tazewell dropping in the 3-pointer that banked in from out front.

After a Boone (4-3) turnover, Catron hit another shot to give the Lady Bulldogs a 44-43 advantage with 5.8 ticks left on the clock. Boone called a timeout and then pushed the ball up the floor to Carmichel who hit the game winner.

“We played well,” Southworth said. “We executed the things I wanted to do, but sometimes things just don’t go your way. I was pleased with the effort, my girls really got after it. It should have gone in the book as a ‘W’ but what can you do.”

Catron poured in a game-high 16 points, along with five rebounds and three steals, to lead the Bulldogs. Autumn Hash tallied six points and eight rebounds.

Jenny Snyder led the balanced Trailblazers attack with 11 points.

Tazewell will play Friday against Haysi at Virginia High at 4 p.m.
