Grundy wins, Tazewell falls in Borderline Classic

BRISTOL, Va. — Grundy defeated Eastside 63-34 in the opening round of the Virginia High Borderline Classic on Wednesday night at the Bearcat Den.

Grundy’s reward is a winner’s bracket game tonight with Gate City at 8:30 p.m. The Blue Devils played in the state finals last season.

“You want to play people like that,” Grundy coach Craig Plymal said. “We know it will be a tough game with full-court pressure the entire game. We will have to play with some patience against a very good team. We just want to learn from it, get better and see how we come out in the end.”

Eastide took their final lead against Grundy at 8-6 after a basket by Erin Stanley. But Grundy (3-0) ended the first quarter on an 11-2 run and rolled to the win.

“We got off to a little slow start but when you get in these tournaments it can be like that,” Plymal said. “Once we got a little action out of our press, that got our transition game going. We got some easy layups and that was the difference.”

A tenacious defense with full-court pressure caused a lot of problems for Eastside. The Spartans had 17 turnovers in the first half. That enabled Grundy to take a 35-13 advantage at halftime.

“Coming in we knew who handled the ball and we pressured the ball,” stated Plymal. “We played good team ball, we had a bunch of girls score.”

Nearly everyone was in the act for Grundy with 12 different players getting on the board. Morgan Hall posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Savannah Charles was the only other player in double figures with a game-high 13 points.

“We didn’t shoot the ball well early, but we made up for it with our defense,” commented Charles. “One of our main goals was to play in your face defense. We wanted to create turnovers, get the ball back and play hard.”

Grundy (3-0) also had an eight to one advantage beyond the arc. Charles led the way with three treys.

“The 3 is good when it goes in,” said Plymal. “But you have to play a little defense behind it.”

Samantha Cole led the Spartans (0-2) with 10 points.
