BRISTOL, Va. — Defensive pressure made life difficult for two of the three Black Diamond District clubs playing in the Borderline Classic Wednesday at the Bearcat Den.

John Battle pressed Haysi into submission and host Virginia High did the same with Hurley.

Battle humbled Haysi 69-24, while the Lady Bearcats routed Hurley, 94-29, in the final of four games.

In game two Wednesday John Battle’s full-court pressure took Haysi out of the game early.

The Trojans forced the Tigers into more turnovers (15) than points (9) in building a 25-9 halftime lead. Battle (3-0) forced 27 turnovers overall.

“It’s been hard to get to this point where we play fast,” said interim John Battle coach Ike Anderson, who is filling in for Kevin Perrigan, who is fighting cancer.

“We got a good effort, we’re just trying to play fast and hard and stay after people.”

Chloe Harris scored 17 points to lead three double figure scorers for the Trojans. Harris scored 10 points in the third quarter, two on a reverse lay-up that capped a 20-1 run to give Battle a 45-10 advantage.

Haysi (2-2) was led by Synthia Sutherland with eight points. The Tigers were just 7-of-33 (21.2 percent) from the field and 8-of-22 (36.4) from the free throw line.
