Mercer Cup: Sunday doubleheader scheduled

BLUEFIELD — Saturday’s Merer Cup Series game between the Princeton Rays and Bluefield Blue Jays was rained out. The two clubs will now play two games today beginning at 4:05 p.m. at Bowen Field.

Admission is free, courtesy of Grant’s Supermarkets.

Sgt. A.J. Wild of the 304th MP Company, U.S. Army Reserve, is now scheduled to throw the ceremonial first pitch to begin game two of today’s doubleheader which should start at approximately 6:30. The 304th has just returned from deployment to Afghanistan.

Game 1: Princeton: Jorge Rodriguez (0-4, 5.27 ERA) vs. Bluefield: Jairo Labourt (1-1, 1.54), 4:05 p.m.

Game 2: German Marquez (1-3, 4.00 ERA) vs. Bluefield: Adonys Cardona (0-1, 6.1 ERA), 20 minutes after first game


Mercer Cup notes: Princeton (7-27), which has lost four games in a row, has scored three or fewer runs in 18 of 34 games this season. Bluefield (22-12) has added two players to its roster, including infielder Lydell Moseby, the son of former Toronto standout Lloyd Moseby, and Phil Kish, a pitcher who has been promoted from the Gulf Coast League.
