PULASKI, Va. — D.J. Davis hit two home runs and drove in four scores, and the Bluefield Blue Jays pitching corps struck out 14 Pulaski batters — nine by Shane Dawson — in a 9-2 win over the Mariners on an 85-degree Sunday at Calfee Park.
With the victory, Bluefield again took sole possession of first place in the Appalachian League East Division.
Davis started the game off with a bang. The leadoff batter smacked a home run over the short right field wall at Calfee Park off Noel De La Cruz for a quick 1-0 lead. He sent another De La Cruz pitch to the same destination in the fourth with two runners on base.
The Mariners, who had seven hits, hurt their cause with five errors.
Chase De Jong started for Bluefield and allowed five hits and Pulaski’s two runs, both in the fourth inning. Dawson struck out nine Mariners in four innings, giving up just two hits and getting his first win of the season. Adaric Kelly pitched the last inning and struck out two more.
De La Cruz surrendered eight runs, seven of them earned, four walks and five hits in four innings.
Bluefield’s Dawel Lugo was 2 for 5 at bat. For Pulaski, Wilton Martinez went 2 for 3 and got the Mariners’ only extra-base hit, a double in the sixth.
Bluefield makes the short trip to Pulaski this evening, followed by a league-wide off day for the Major League All-Star break. The Blue Jays then play 12 of the last 15 days of July at Bowen Field, starting with a three-game set against Burlington on Wednesday.
Blue Jays note: The Toronto organization released Eric Arce on Sunday.
