Concord baseball opens season with doubleheader split at Mt. Olive

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. — The Concord University baseball team launched its season Sunday by surprising the No. 4 team in NCAA Division II, Mount Olive, with an 11-10 victory in 10 innings. The Trojans won the second game 14-1.

Concord’s win in game one was the program’s first season-opening victory since  2004.

The Mountain Lions took a 3-0 lead in the first inning, with Joey Miller driving in two runs with a single. Concord added five runs in the fourth for an 8-2 lead, but the Trojans scored five runs in the sixth to tie the game 8-8.

Concord led off the 10th with a double by Jarrod Groves, who came home on Ryan Johnston’s second RBI of the day. Miller’s sacrifice flty plated Johnston for an 11-9 lead.

The Trojans got one run in their half of the 10th, but senior relief pitcher Tim Leather induced a game-ending groundout and picked up the win. He scattered two runs and three hits over 4 1/3 innings in the longest outing of his Concord career.

Deshorn Lake took the loss for Mount Olive after giving up both runs in the 10th inning.

Ryan Weatherholtz, Concord’s starter, allowed three runs on five hits over five innings. Chris Baker came on in relief of Weatherholtz in the sixth, giving up five runs in two-thirds of an inning.

Bret Blevins, Johnston and Miller combined to go 9-for-15 with seven RBI and six runs scored. Individually, Blevins was 5-for-6 with three RBI, three runs and one stolen base.

The Trojans held the Mountain Lions to just three hits in game two.

New CU shortstop Brad Sullivan stole a pair of bases and scored the visitors’ lone run.

Tyler Coyle (0-1) surrendered seven runs, six earned, over 5 2/3 innings in the loss.

Willie Martin was 3 for 4 and Zak Orrison was 2 for 4 and each drove in three runs for the Trojans, who scored seven times in the seventh inning to wrap up the day’s scoring.

The deciding game in the series is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. today.
