Defense, 19-0 run lift Concord over Yellow Jackets

INSTITUTE — Concord went on a 19-0 scoring spree that spanned halftime and routed West Virginia State 82-68 on Saturday afternoon at Fleming Hall in Institute.

Defensively, Concord (8-16, 5-13 MEC) forced 23 turnovers and limited the Yellow Jackets (5-13, 8-13) to a 38.2 percent field-goal success rate to win for the first time since Feb. 3.

In the final five minutes of the first half, Concord scored 13 straight points for a 39-31 halftime edge. The Mountain Lions tacked on eight more unanswered points after the break.

Freshman Aaron Miller came off the bench to score a career-high 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting including three 3-pointers. He also had two assists.

Terry Hopewell’s 13-point, 13-rebound performance also included four blocks. Mike Boyd generated 16 points, five assists and four steals, and Cam Shannon chipped in 15 points and six steals.

The Mountain Lions pulled down 46 rebounds and produced 22 second-chance points to State’s nine.

Jelen-Joy Dimitrios paced West Virginia State with a game-high 20 points and five rebounds.

W.Va. State women 66, Concord 60

The Concord women (9-13, 7-11) suffered their fifth straight loss even with a season-high 14 steals that helped create 22 points off turnovers.

Concord led for most of the first half, starting the game with an 8-2 advantage. West Virginia State (15-9, 11-7) took a 22-21 halftime edge. The Mountain Lions retook the lead 34-30, but their hosts pulled ahead again.

CU trimmed the margin to 50-48 with 5:48 left, but State went on a 9-3 run and held on for the win.

The Yellow Jackets’ Lexi Carson scored a game-high 25 points.

Concord center Sammi Webster blocked six shots and Andrea Bertrand matched her career high with five steals.

Sissy Wagner had 19 points and four steals, while Rachel Artrip was 7 for 15 shooting from the field and grabbed seven rebounds.

Concord’s eight blocks was the most since Jan. 12, 2012, when they blocked 10 shots at West Virginia State.
