Bluefield Daily Telegraph
The scoreless streak for the Bluefield Blue Jays reached 24 innings on Sunday afternoon, and Johnson City was ready to capitalize, taking a 7-0 win at Bowen Field in front of 627 fans.
The Cardinals’ starter, Dailyn Martinez, pitched six strong innings and struck out eight batters to pick up his first Appalachian League victory.
Bluefield (10-6), which retains the top spot in the Appy League East, got five of their six hits off Martinez.
Derrick Loveless collected a double in the fifth to become the only Bluefieldian to reach base safely in a span of 11 batters in the middle of the contest. Melvin Garcia got the Blue Jays’ other extra-base hit, a two-out double in the ninth, but was left stranded at third base when the game ended.
The Cardinals broke out of a scoreless tie with three runs in the fourth inning, coming via a pair of RBI doubles by Kenneth Peoples-Walls and J.J. Altobelli, sandwiched around a run-scoring single by Kyle Grieshaber.
Those scores eventually pinned the loss on Bluefield starting pitcher Shane Dawson (0-2). He allowed six hits while striking out seven batters.
The Cardinals padded the score in the top of the ninth, getting five straight singles off relief pitcher Chase DeJong followed by Ronnierd Garcia’s double off DeJong’s replacement, Francisco Gracesqui.
Johnson City (9-7) banged out 15 hits and won its second straight. The two teams will face off again tonight starting at 7:05 p.m. at Bowen Field. Free T-shirts will be distributed to 200 fans.
